Abstract Scope |
Multi-component ultra-high temperature ceramics (MC-UHTCs) are promising candidates for next generation re-entry hypersonic vehicles due to high melting point (>3000 C), excellent thermos-mechanical and oxidation properties. Herein, a systematic approach was used to fabricate binary (Ta, Nb) C, ternary (Ta, Nb, Hf) C, and quaternary (Ta, Nb, Hf, Ti)C UHTCs by gradual addition of UHTC components via spark plasma sintering (SPS). The wear behavior studied using a scratch tester with progressive loading from 1-50 N indicated that wear performance enhanced significantly for ternary and quaternary samples. Wear performance has been ranked based on the coefficient of friction (COF), penetration depth, and wear rate. The scratch profile indicates fracture and surface plowing as the dominant wear mechanisms. Overall, this study establishes MC-UHTCs as a viable candidate for applications, where sharp particles impacting on the material can result in inelastic deformation and material removal. |
