Presentation Title Improvement of Strength and Ductility of CuTa Composites by ECAE Processing

Abstract Scope We investigated the mechanical properties of copper-tantalum powder composites that had undergone equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) following route A, wherein material is repeatedly extruded without any interpass rotation. As expected, the composite microstructure and properties became increasingly anisotropic as a result. Remarkably, tensile testing reveals a substantial increase in both strength and ductility, regardless of the orientation of the tensile axis with respect to the microstructural features. Metallographic examination and compositional analysis of the as-sintered and extruded material before and after tensile testing shows the presence of non-metallic inclusions decorating Cu-Ta phase boundaries. We attribute changes in the mechanical properties of the composite to the progressive breakup of these inclusions and their removal from phase boundaries and changes in phase morphology.
