Abstract Scope |
Advanced nuclear reactors are expected to operate under much harsher conditions than the existing ones, necessitating the use of advanced materials and manufacturing technologies. The alloy 14YWT (Fe-14Cr-3W-0.4Ti-0.3Y2O3 (wt. %)) is a prospective candidate material for manufacturing fuel cladding tubes and other structural elements for next-generation nuclear reactors. The SolidStirŪ-Ex technology (patented by Enabled Engineering) can surmount the limitations of the current fuel cladding tube manufacturing process. Nonetheless, it is crucial to understand how processing parameters influence the microstructure of the extruded tube. To achieve this, the ball-milled 14YWT alloy powders were consolidated in a die machined on an Inconel 625 plate at 400, 500, and 600 rpm tool rotational rates in an Ar atmosphere using friction stir processing. A detailed microstructural analysis focusing on ultrafine grain and texture evolution has been conducted and will be presented for both as-processed and aged (1000 °C, 15 minutes) conditions. |
