Abstract Scope |
We fabricated faceted single crystalline nanoparticles of Pt and Cu employing the solid state dewetting of respective thin films deposited on sapphire substrate. The mass particle compression was performed employing a rigid punch, and statistically significant information on the microstructure of severely deformed particles was obtained. We demonstrated the development of subgrains and the change of average orientation with respect to substrate in deformed nanoparticles. The rotation angle increased with increasing plastic strain. We discussed the role of surface and interface diffusion in experimentally observed particles rotation at room temperature. Lastly, we applied the insights gained from these nanoparticle experiments to discuss the mechanisms behind the formation of ultrafine grain microstructures during severe plastic deformation of bulk materials. |
