The effect of severe plastic deformation (SPD) on microstructural changes associated with microchemistry has been of great interest in recent times. In this investigation, a precipitate containing niobium alloy Nb-1Zr-0.1C was subjected to high pressure torsion (HPT) deformation at room temperature, under 6 GPa hydrostatic pressure at 1 rpm speed to 1, 2 and 5 rotations. It was observed that the composition of the carbide precipitates was modified due to dissolution of the existing Nb rich carbides and their reprecipitation into Nb lean carbides. The strengths of the alloys were measured corresponding to incremental plastic strain. The strengthening contributions from various strengthening mechanisms were subsequently partitioned by utilizing the results obtained from multiscale characterization techniques. The primary strengthening contributor in Nb alloys were found to be the substructures formed by dislocations. In fact, plasticity of the HPT processed niobium alloys was found to be dependent on the dislocation substructures. |
