Abstract Scope |
A significant challenge remains for the realisation of multi-metallic additive manufacturing, particularly where complex geometries are required. This talk will present our latest research efforts on the fabrication of CuSn10 and 316L multi-metal assemblies, structures that have attracted interest in the tooling and energy sectors. The structures investigated are fabricated using of a multi-beam L-PBF system equipped with multi-material recoater. The talk will present methods and solutions that we have developed to manufacture robust material transitions which include geometrical design of interfaces and selection of laser parameters that minimise crack susceptibility. The development of stresses at the interface is discussed in relation to the thermo-physical properties of the mating materials as well as the effective contact interface area. Crack susceptibility will be discussed in relation to the chemical mixing produced by the convective flow in the melt pool and the corresponding effects on the solidification trajectories. |
