Abstract Scope |
Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a powerful additive manufacturing (AM) technology for producing multi-material metallic structures. However, using metallic powders for multi-material printing presents challenges like powder contamination and interfacial defects. This study demonstrates the advantages of using a combination of metallic powders and foils for printing lightweight titanium-aluminum structures. AlSi12 powder was printed with LPBF, and the role of a second material feedstock (Ti-6Al-4V powders/foils) was investigated. Through simulations and operando XRD, the process was monitored in real-time. Nanoindentation was used to examine the deformation behavior of the interface, brittleness of intermetallic compounds (IMCs), and residual stresses. The use of Ti-6Al-4V foils instead of powders resulted in a thinner layer of IMCs and the elimination of large interfacial cracks. FEM simulations and operando XRD supported the findings, suggesting preheating of the foil prior to mixing, resulting in improved microstructures and a flawless interface. |
