Abstract Scope |
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) in which composition varied within a component result in spatially varying properties. Ideally, FGMs will be designed to have spatially tailored properties for component multifunctionality. However, when mixing well-known alloys or elements, failure may occur during the AM process due to reasons including deleterious phase formation or solidification cracking. This talk will describe our experimentally validated computational tools for considering deleterious phase formation, microsegregation, and solidification crack susceptibility to design crack-free compositional pathways suitable for FGM processing. It will also discuss the practical considerations of spatial resolution for compositional changes in FGMs along with path planning tools for property optimization. |
