Abstract Scope |
Liquid rocket combustion chambers operate in extreme thermal environments which demand complex design and advanced material performance. Powder-fed directed energy deposition enables the production of graded interfaces with smooth transitions between the high mechanical strength of Inconel 625 and the thermal properties of GRCop-42. This study examines various length scales of the additively-graded interface, evaluating the effect of melt pool mixing and thermal cycles on composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties. Electron microscopy, EDS, and EBSD has revealed the microstructural complexity of the graded interfaces and the influence that it has on attendant properties and performance. Processing paths that reduce hot tearing and crack formation have been developed. The microstructural observations are being paralleled by process modeling and milli-scale mechanical testing, with the overarching goal being to identify the critical length scale that maximizes interfacial strength and minimizes interfacial cracking and delamination. |
