Abstract Scope |
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) offer enhanced properties for industrial applications through their gradual variation in composition or structure. Additive manufacturing (AM) is suitable for developing FGMs but faces challenges such as poor bonding and mixing between materials, leading to defects and undesired properties. To address these issues, we investigated solute redistribution during the laser powder bed fusion process using Cu alloy powder on an Al base plate. Real-time imaging reveals complex fluid dynamics in the melt pool of Cu and Al. Post-mortem quantitative tomography analysis shows the local Cu composition, providing insights into the mixing behavior. Experimental data is complemented by high-fidelity computer simulations to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in FGM via AM. |
