Developing new multicomponent nanoscale materials are integral to obtaining unique catalytic, magnetic, electrical, or optical properties. We created new solid solution alloys in systems which are immiscible in bulk by forming nanoparticles by Inert Gas Condensation (IGC), a far-from-equilibrium processing method. Co-Mo nanoparticles with extended solubility of Mo in Co were produced by inert gas condensation. EDS spectra from TEM showed an elemental composition of approximately 82 at. % Co and 18 at. % Mo. Sputtering power (50,100 & 150W) was varied to observe the structure and size of nanoclusters. In HRTEM, the structural state of the Co-Mo clusters with 50W was predominantly amorphous whereas 100 and 150 W showed predominantly single-crystalline structures. Nanoclusters were about 7-15 nm in diameter. Co-Mo nanoclusters are ferromagnetic at room temperature, and coercivity increased with increase in sputtering power due to formation of crystalline structures at higher sputtering powers. |
