Abstract Scope Capacitive thermoelectric conversion devices utilizing non-linear capacitance variation with temperature provide a promising opportunity to convert low-grade waste heat into electricity. In this research, Pulsed Laser Deposition has been optimized to deposit thin films of Barium Calcium Zirconium Titanite (BCZT) on a (100)-oriented SrTiO3 (STO) substrate to access their suitability as a thin dielectric layer for the capacitive thermoelectric application. Based on X-ray diffraction results, the most promising of these films in terms of orientational growth in relation to the substrate was chosen to fabricate an in-plane electrode-type capacitor. XPS analysis showed sufficient transfer of stichometry during thin film deposition. Leakage current measurements showed relatively low leakage current behaviour. Capacitance-temperature measurements revealed that the film exhibited adequate capacitance-temperature dependence with a Curie temperature of about 368 K. From these results, the BCZT thin film was concluded to be a promising dielectric material for the capacitive thermoelectric converter application.
