Presentation Title Fluorescent Multi-layer Europium-doped Coatings Created using Ion Assisted Deposition

Abstract Scope Fluorescent coatings can be used to measure temperatures on surfaces of protective windows. The combination of ceramic materials and fluorescent dopants can withstand extreme conditions while producing strong temperature-dependent photoluminescence. In this work, europium (Eu3+) doped yttria, a red emitting phosphor that emits light at 611 nm, is coated onto silicon and sapphire substrates by sequentially depositing layers of europium oxide and yttrium oxide via ion assisted deposition (IAD). Then, high temperature annealing is used to achieve appropriate phase formation of deposited thin films. The surface morphology and composition of the annealed films are studied using high resolution field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), high resolution optical microscope equipped with elemental analysis, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The temperature-dependent emission time constants are observed under UV excitation up to 1400K and the optical performance of coatings are studied in order to enable their use for temperature sensing at high temperatures.
