Presentation Title Forming of Open Structured Zn1.5Mg Coated with Polymers for Absorbable Tissues

Abstract Scope For biomedical applications, zinc is a promising resorbable material. Additions of magnesium improve its strength, but is limited to avoid intermetallic phases being detrimental to ductility. To influence and control the corrosion rate of such alloys, a metal-polymer hybrid material can be used. However, for the bulk metals, only the surface can be modified with polymers. Thus, a leaching process was applied to produce an open Zn-structure to be filled, or only covered on the inside and outside surfaces of the alloy with the polymer afterwards. Zinc alloys were infiltrated in a NaCl-scaffold of fraction 1-2 mm. With a cast diameter of approx. 20 mm, the final geometry focused on was in the area of some mm in diameter. The reduction had been performed using different forming processes. Results of casting and forming conditions and their boundaries and drawbacks in combination with polymer coating will be introduced and discussed.
