Abstract Scope |
Additive Manufacture (AM) of refractory metal and alloys is an active area of development for propulsion applications that operate under extreme environments. A standard process for inspection of components is non-destructive evaluation, typically through x-ray computer tomography (CT); however, due to the high atomic number of the refractory metal elements these methods are not suitable. Therefore, high energy CT and neutron CT are investigated to show applicability to defect detection. L-PBF AM W, Mo, and C103 specimens were printed with engineered defects designed to mimic those seen during the L-PBF process. Specimens underwent high energy and neutron inspection as well as destructive evaluation to determine the morphology and size of engineered defects. NASA partnered with commercially available vendors in order to establish a service for serial inspection of propulsion components, which is expected for commercial space vendors logistic supply chain to meet flight certification standards. |
