Symposium Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing: Part Quality and Performance
Presentation Title Powder Engineering for High Performance Cold Spray Materials
Author(s) Bradley Richards, Joe Heelan, Ben Young
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Bradley Richards
Abstract Scope Rapid advancement in cold spray technology has created a need for high-quality powder feedstock engineered to meet the rigorous demands of the process and its many applications. The solid-state nature of cold spray for both additive applications and coatings makes the microstructure of the powder feedstock critical to achieving the desired properties. As such, powder engineered for each individual application is a critical enabling factor to achieve the highest levels of performance and consistency. We describe the applicability of cermets, metallic clad particles, metal matrix composites (MMCs), heat treated metals, and engineered multi-scale composites that have successfully achieved challenging material properties and high deposition efficiency. These powders have been optimized for Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing (CSAM), coatings, and everything in between. The materials are discussed in the context of creating new opportunities for the cold spray industry.
