Abstract Scope |
Semiconductor nanocrystals / colloidal quantum dots (QDs) can be used in a variety of applications, from LEDs, to medicine, to light harvesters for third generation solar cells. Our simpler and faster one-pot microwave irradiation synthesis technique shows that cadmium selenide (CdSe) QDs can be synthesized and size-tuned in a controlled environment without the need for cumbersome hot-injection and in situ extraction methods. The QDs grown with manipulated microwave parameters also show predictable differences in ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) under exposure of UV light, further validating this newer synthesis procedure. Special considerations are given to the challenges and opportunities inherent with microwave synthesis, including scaling up to industry standards and fine-tuning QDs specifically for photovoltaic applications. |
