Abstract Scope This study investigates the development of residual stresses in 2205 duplex stainless steel during laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) using in situ and operando neutron diffraction. Experiments were conducted on a custom-built LPBF system designed for neutron studies, enabling real-time measurements in the bulk of the material. Bragg-edge imaging was additionally employed to assess crystallographic texture. The results reveal that stress redistribution occurs primarily in the initial layers when subsequent layers are added. A strong cube texture was observed across the sample and found to significantly influence residual stress evaluation, with errors up to 96 MPa if texture effects are neglected. Variations in texture intensity are linked to changes in local thermal history during processing. These findings demonstrate the need for orientation-dependent diffraction elastic constants and establish neutron-based methods as powerful tools for probing subsurface stress evolution in additive manufacturing.
