Abstract Scope Understanding evolution in chemistry, microstructure, and physical properties during processing, testing, and even service is vital for materials design and performance. In-situ or operando neutron diffraction is a powerful tool of crystallographic characterization to provide extensive bulk information on evolution of phase structure, composition, dislocations, twinning, texture, and strains when a material is under external stimuli, such as force, temperature, electromagnetic field and their combination. Such advantages are enabled by neutrons’ deep penetrating capability that facilitates a variety of sample environments including those for operando processes, and the special isotope contrast to probe lightweight and neighboring transition-metal elements. VULCAN is a time-of-flight engineering neutron diffractometer at the Spallation Neutron Source. We present selected science cases demonstrating how the recently upgraded VULCAN has been used to understand engineering materials properties and behaviors under complex sample environments.
