Dr. Michael Bakas is the Program Manager for the ARL Army Research Office's Synthesis and Processing program. In this talk, Dr. Bakas will describe the different funding opportunities for basic research in materials offered by the Army and more broadly the DoD. This will include the Army Research Office Programs, mechanisms of cooperative research with the Army Research Laboratory, and larger programs like MURI and DEPSCoR. Details of how the funding system works, the role the program manager plays in the funding process, and the origins of MURI and STTR topics will be presented. Finally, the new competency-based structure for the Army Research Laboratory will be discussed, with advice for PIs on how they can engage with it.
