Abstract Scope |
Bauxite residue valorisation is difficult. The processes and the technologies need to work, the economics need to be right, the environmental footprint should be low, and product specs need to be met. These are the requirements in a nutshell. More and detailed requirements have been added by society at large and the policy maker in particular: zero emission and zero waste, climate resilience, ‘do not significantly harm’ principle, biodiversity and land use, product regulations, to name a few. Furthermore, existing and new standards play a role. This brings new technical-environmental-economic challenges, questions and dilemmas. To get new technologies into (industrial) practice, also the challenges posed by the broader societal context need to be overcome. Using the bauxite residue valorisation processes developed in the EU HARARE project as a case study, these will be explored. |
