Presentation Title SPG-49: Properties of Additive Friction Stir Deposition Aluminum 7075

Abstract Scope Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) is a solid-state additive manufacturing process suitable for depositing meter-scale parts. This study characterizes the residual stress distribution, microstructural, and hardness heterogeneity in 18-layer AFSD aluminum 7075 builds. Neutron residual stress mapping in the characteristic directions (transverse, TD; longitudinal, LD; and normal, ND) was performed with 3 mm TD x 6 mm LD x 3 mm ND voxels to create TD-ND cross-sectional maps. Maximum residual tensile stresses of 233 12 MPa were observed in the LD in the base plate 6-7 mm below the deposit. Spatial variation of hardness values was observed, with lowest hardness in the first deposited layers at 74 HV, and highest hardness in the final deposited layer at 133 HV. The spatial variation of hardness is suspected to be caused by thermal cycling in lower layers as upper layers are deposited.
