Presentation Title SPG-60: Characteristics of Laser and Electron Beam Welds of Borated Stainless Steel for Neutron Absorbers and Structural Materials for Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel

Abstract Scope Boron is inserted as a neutron absorber polymer into the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) wet storage rack and the dry storage cask basket. Boron-containing Stainless Steel (BSS) serves as both a structural material and a neutron absorber, and can be used to manufacture a compact structure for storing SNF. In this study, laser and electron beam welding were applied to BSS plates with boron content of 0.9 wt.% and 1.1 wt.% manufactured through casting and rolling. The porosity, microstructure, and mechanical properties of BSS welds were analyzed according to heat source and power. Weld metal boride was finely distributed at the dendrite scale. Hardness was highest in the order: weld zone, base metal, and heat-affected zone (HAZ). In tensile and bending tests, failure occurred in the HAZ. The weld metal showed higher hardness than the base metal, and showed improved properties as a structural material compared to the base metal.
