||Experimental and Numerical Study on the Effect of Support Force in Double Sided Incremental Forming

Double sided incremental forming (DSIF) is the die-less process and capable of forming complex geometries. DSIF uses two tools, at any instant one tool is used to deform the sheet while other acts as support. However, there is a possibility for the support tool to lose contact with sheet during forming mainly because of sheet, tool and machine deflections. Support tool not only provides local support but can be used to apply controlled support force. In this work, finite element analysis of the force controlled DSIF is carried out to study the effect of support force on the sheet thinning, spring back and residual stresses. Forming and support forces measured are compared with the predictions of FEA and are in good agreement. Residual stresses on support surface along meridional direction predicted using FEA for different forces are compared with that of stamping. squeezing occurs beyond certain value of support force.
