Presentation Title An Innovative Approach to Smelter Grade Alumina Calcination Using Renewable Energy
Author(s) Michael Wheatland, Jerry Fu
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Michael Wheatland
Abstract Scope This whitepaper introduces a game-changing technology in alumina production - the Calix eAlumina Calciner. This novel calcination process replaces fossil fuels with electricity, capitalizing on cheap renewable energy readily available at most alumina refineries. Harnessing the power of cheap and abundant clean energy, the eAlumina process introduces a paradigm shift in energy usage and emissions for alumina calcination. Uniquely, the eAlumina Calciner also produces pure steam from the alumina which is not contaminated by non-condensable exhaust gas during calcination, which can be efficiently recycled into the Bayer process for digestion and evaporation, elevating overall energy efficiency. Furthermore, the calciner design significantly mitigates particle breakage common in traditional calcination, improving the yield and efficiency in the Bayer Circuit's precipitation process and boosting product quality. By incorporating these transformative features, the Calix eAlumina Calciner is poised to revolutionize the alumina production industry for efficiency, sustainability, emissions and quality.
