Abstract Scope |
This talk aims to understand the role of internal surfaces and interfaces on martensitic phase transformations in nuclear structural alloys. The talk will focus primarily on diffusionless solid-state martensitic transformations, i.e., strain-induced transformations, in fcc and bcc steels and in Ni-based alloys. We will use a combination of small-scale mechanical testing and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study a variety of surfaces and metal-gas interfaces, specifically retained pores (from fabrication or welding), gas bubbles, irradiation-induced voids, and chloride-induced crack tips. We will demonstrate that surface energy can contribute to activating strain-induced martensitic transformations, but that gas pressure may have an even more significant role. We will extend these observations to thermally-activated martensitic transformations in bcc/bct steels to reveal that pores and precipitate interfaces can also stabilize martensite. We will conclude with a phenomenological model that can explain surface- or interface-mediated martensitic transformations. |
