Abstract Scope |
Although much attention has been devoted to the structure and properties of individual grain boundaries and to the connectivity of the grain boundary network, our understanding of junctions at the intersections of the grain boundaries remains limited. A fundamental question is how the dislocations present at individual grain-boundaries interact at a junction between two or more boundaries. In this presentation, we address this question, focusing in detail on high resolution STEM observations and atomistic simulations of junctions at intersecting Σ=3 {112} grain boundaries in FCC metals. From this analysis, we discuss the topological implications for how the dislocation networks describing the intersecting boundaries must interact at the junction itself.
