Abstract Scope |
A career in university research provides near unlimited freedom to pursue diverse research topics coupled with a mission to educate students and share knowledge with society at large. This contrasts to a corporate environment driven by product launch schedules, quarterly reporting, and the structure provided by business operating units.
In this talk, perspectives will be shared on experiences building Additive Manufacturing (AM) activities in non-profit research institutes, startups, and publicly traded corporate enterprises and similarities and differences with AM activities in a university academic environment. Topics will include finding funding, building momentum for capital infrastructure, engaging students, and building an ecosystem of partners. In closing, views will be presented on the future of industry-government-academic collaboration and how that maps to a future manufacturing renaissance powered by 3D printing. |
