Abstract Scope Glass foams have great potential for several technological applications, for example, filters and thermal or acoustic insulators. Conventional foaming agents (e.g. carbon black, carbonates, and sulfates) used to produce glass foams release greenhouse gases into the environment, such as carbon dioxide. We have been studying the development of glass foams based on soda‐lime glass waste and NaOH (foaming agent). During foaming, NaOH reacts with the glass matrix and releases only steam. The production of glass foam involves a conventional ceramic processing route. Depending on the experimental conditions, bulk density varied from 0.16 to 0.79 g/cm3 with maximum porosity of 92%. Glass foams presented flexural strength of 773.83 kPa and thermal conductivity at 25°C of 0.046 W/m.K, which are in agreement with those values found for commercial glass foams. The foam glass compositions under study are promising candidates for application in buildings as thermal insulation boards.
