||Accurate Evaluation of Friction and Wear during Stamping Operations Using Metal Forming Tribometer

Virtual forming simulations are used to reduce manufacturing developmental costs and risks. High fidelity friction models as a function of local pressure, temperature and sliding velocity are crucial inputs to predict formability of parts. Conventional tribometers cannot reproduce friction and wear mechanisms and conditions and hence do not provide accurate friction data. Ducom Metal Forming Tribometer (MFT) is a unique instrument for evaluation of friction and wear in sliding contacts relevant to forming/stamping operations. The test configuration exposes fresh contacting surfaces and offers independent heating of the pin (tool) and strip (workpiece). This configuration captures the true influence of generation and accumulation of wear debris on friction. Friction can be measured over a wide range of conditions: contact pressures upto 50 MPa, temperatures upto 1000 deg C and sliding velocities upto 200 mm/sec. The talk will cover the design and validation of the Metal Forming Tribometer.
