Abstract Scope Herein, we present a novel electrochemical biosensor designed for the detection of rare earth elements (REEs), using cerium ions as an example. Facile means of detecting REEs in the field could be useful in their detection in industrial waste streams and environmental samples such as urine. In this work, we investigate the utility of an EF-hand loop peptide sequence derived from lanmodulin exhibiting a remarkable affinity for various REEs conjugated to tyrosine as a redox active amino acid in an electrochemical sensing platform, where current changes as target material binds and peptides undergo conformational shifts. The biosensor is constructed by the immobilization of peptides through thiol binding onto gold-coated working electrodes, in a screen-printed sensor platform. Data is shared demonstrating the combination of the electrochemical platform and peptide aptamer as capable of selective sensing of cerium in simple buffer solutions and artificial urine at levels relevant to human health.
