Abstract Scope There has been a detrimental increase of single-use plastic in the medical industry, and this increase of petroleum-based films in landfills has shown serious consequences to our environment. Our approach to create a more sustainable option is to use a blend of biodegradable polysaccharides, many of which are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) certified. We began experimenting on our film with a range of crosslinking times from one to six hours. By using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) to test Young’s and loss modulus of the experimental groups and a control medical film, we found that a crosslinking time of six hours yielded the best results. We observed that longer crosslinking times led to a decrease in storage modulus, however the six hour crosslinked film had a greater storage modulus than the control medical film. Our results thus far have shown that this biodegradable film can mimic standard films used today.
