Abstract Scope |
Through the inoculation of solute and nucleant, this research aims to reduce the microstructural heterogeneities of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, as one of the most promising alloys for additively manufactured parts. To this end, according to the thermodynamic calculations, the type and quantity of the solute and nucleant have been selected and premixed with the Ti-6Al-4V powder. Due to the localized high temperature in the molten pool during the DED process, the inoculated particles decomposed, leading to in-situ phase formation and dissolved elements in the molten pool. The newly formed phases and dissolved elements in the melt pool can alter the solidification pathway by increasing the number of heterogeneous nucleation sites and promoting the constitutional supercooling, which results in the transformation of columnar grains into equiaxed grains. The findings of this study provide new insights into solute and nucleant roles that govern the printed grain structure. |
