Lightweight but strong materials offer great potential for increasing vehicle fuel efficiency while maintaining performance. Forming dispersive tri-aluminide nanoprecipitates in a ductile Al FCC matrix is desirable to achieve excellent mechanical properties in light-weight Al alloys. However, to form a high-volume fraction of such precipitates with the desirable size and distribution remains a challenge via solid state precipitation. In this work, we additively manufactured Al-Zr and Al-Nb bulk alloys with a high-volume fraction of dispersive Al3Zr and Al3Nb nanoprecipitates in the Al-Fcc matrix. SEM, TEM and APT were used to characterize the microstructure which was then coupled with cellular automata modeling to understand microstructural evolution during solidification. In-situ tensile test under neutron diffraction was used to study the mechanical behaviors and deformation mechanisms. Both alloys demonstrated a good combination tensile strength and elongation. This work was supported by the Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. |
