Abstract Scope |
Gradient and multi-material additive manufacturing (AM) techniques can serve as a platform for accelerated validation of new alloy designs and high-throughput qualification. This talk will present a new hybrid AM system for manufacturing compositionally graded components, combining inkjet printing with laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Prior to, or following, the spreading of each consecutive powder layer, ink is deposited in a two-dimensional pattern to dictate compositionally modified regions. Solids in the ink therefore combine with the base powder to achieve local in situ alloying within the AM process. Key design considerations including thermal isolation of the inkjet system, temperature control of the build volume (up to 500C), and atmosphere control, will be presented along with single-layer experiments to establish the spatial resolution and limits to gradient control. System performance is demonstrated through printing and characterization of gradient refractory composites, using a Niobium-based powder as the base feedstock and nanoparticle-based inks. |
