Abstract Scope Many metallurgical applications are looking into hydrogen to replace fossil carbon to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions. This paper will present the results from pilot trials to replace carbon with hydrogen gas in Boliden’s Zinc fuming process. The recovery of zinc is traditionally done by injecting solid carbon and air into molten zinc containing slag. Carbon and CO(g) reduces the zinc oxide into Zn(g) which is reoxidised in the free-board and separated into a zinc product. In the project “Slag reduction with hydrogen gas” with support from the Swedish Energy Agency, Boliden, Linde and Swerim have performed pilot experiments with injection of hydrogen gas into molten zinc slag from Boliden’s Rönnskär plant to evaluate yield and energy efficiency. Experiments have been conducted in Swerim’s 3 tonne universal converter. Two different methods were tested i) traditional tuyeres and ii) CoJet developed by Linde.
