Abstract Scope |
In this study, an efficient deoxidation process of off-grade Ti sponge using Mg with a wire mesh strainer type of crucible was investigated. The deoxidation of TiH2 powder, prepared by hydrogenation of the off-grade Ti sponge in advance, was conducted using Mg in molten KCl – MgCl2 salt at 933 K under Ar and 20 % H2 mixed gas atmosphere. After deoxidation, the crucible was lifted to conduct in-situ separation of residual Mg-containing salt from the crucible. When the salt was not clearly separated, a mixture of Ti and TiH2 was obtained and its O concentration was 0.121 mass% under certain conditions. Meanwhile, pure TiH2 was obtained by increasing the H2 gas flow rate during deoxidation. Therefore, these results demonstrate that the decrease of O concentration in Ti to below 0.180 mass% by using Mg in high hydrogen chemical potential and minimization of the loss of the salt are feasible. |
