Abstract Scope |
Ni based superalloys are widely used in high temperature environments, e.g., turbine engines, due to their excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperature, resistance to creep deformation and corrosion. The most common strengthening mechanism for Ni based superalloys is precipitation hardening by the formation of coherent ordered L12 precipitates. The structure of precipitates can be paralleled by each other via rafting (single variant) and variant selection. In spite of the significant work on rafting during deformation of gamma/L12 in Ni-based alloys, there has been essentially no experimental work on variant selection in homogenous precipitation strengthened Ni alloy. In the current study, the influence of both thermal history and external elastic stress on the variant selection of intragranular precipitates has been analyzed in the polycrystalline and single crystalline Haynes 244 alloy and Inconel 718. The modulated high temperature mechanical properties are discussed. |
