Abstract Scope There is considerable interest in quantum devices now and foreseeably into the future, which motivates research into glass-clad fibers containing super- and semi-conducting cores. Until recently, the scalable fabrication of crystalline super- and semi-conductors and semi-conductor junction fibers, has been limited if not possible. To be discussed here are initial efforts using the molten core method (MCM) of crystalline core fiber fabrication to fabricate in-fiber quantum materials and devices. Two major obstacles will be discussed and routes to their mitigation, including homogeneity of the core throughout the glass-clad fiber and differential thermal expansion. Efforts employing CO2 laser post processing of soft glass clad crystalline core fibers will also be discussed.
