Abstract Scope The objective of this experiment was to measure and analyze the chemical interaction between container glass and various beverages. These beverages ranged in pH from very acidic to neutral. The research was conducted by subjecting glass samples to immersion tests in the selected beverages over a period of time. Various instruments were used to collect data on the glass both before and after the experiment including X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. These results have important implications for the food and beverage industry as well as for the design and maintenance of glassware used in domestic and commercial settings since they can be used to determine the aggregate effects of beverages on soda-lime-silica glass and whether or not container glass is safe to be used in bottles.
