Abstract Scope The surfaces of glasses are ubiquitously susceptible to scratches and corrosion, which negates their functional properties. A viable approach for minimizing these damages is to deposit protective coatings imparting mechanical and chemical durability. Herein, graphene deposition over silica glass surfaces is demonstrated to subdue its wear under ambient and aqueous conditions. Few-layered graphene, exfoliated progressively from a HOPG crystal, was systematically characterized with micro-Raman and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to confirm its nature and lateral size distribution. The AFM scratch tests of graphene-glass surfaces against a diamond-tipped cantilever at multiple loads reveal a remarkable reduction in dry friction as well as tribochemical wear in aqueous environments. In addition, the molecular dynamics simulations unravel the stress-shielding and deformation mechanisms of graphene-glass surfaces undergoing indentation and scratch. Altogether, this study shows that graphene-based coatings on glasses hold great promise for the development of contact damage-resistant glass surfaces.
