This paper deals with the determination of variances of the joining point loads in car body structures caused by manufacturing tolerances and scatter in material properties. Parameter studies in car body simulations under global bending and global torsion are presented, showing the influence of changing manufacturing parameters on the loads of the connection points. The data of more than 6000 joining points are evaluated in terms of statistics and prevailing load combinations. Finally, the gained knowledge about the actual distribution between pure tensile and shear loads and their variance within a body-in-white under realistic global loads enables an optimized design of mechanical joining processes such as clinching or riveting.
