| Abstract Scope |
Biological systems provide inspiration to engineering interfaces through their interconnectedness and self-organization with functions connecting multiple scales. Peptides as versatile molecular tools enable to mimic nature’s molecular engineering. We have been focusing on enabling peptide enabled mechanisms in designing molecular-to multi-scale interfaces as a path for biohybrid and bioactive interface and materials design. Here, we will present a peptide enabled approach to tune the silver chemistry within heterogenous carious tissue interface to improve a therapeutic efficacy of a non-invasive treatment of dental cavities. The chemical transformations that occur in the heterogeneous regions of carious dental tissue during non-invasive silver diamine fluoride (SDF) treatment remain poorly understood. Raman micro-spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to identify the silver compounds at the tissue, and consequently integrated a peptide during the treatment to tune the chemical transformation. The proposed approach may offer a path to eliminate the drawbacks of this treatment. |
