Abstract Scope |
Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) allows the creation of large, complex metal parts with minimal tooling and short lead times. However, the high power input and time-varying conduction pathways caused by changing geometry during deposition result in highly transient, spatially varying thermal histories throughout the part. This leads to uneven in-situ heat treatment and variations in microstructure and resulting properties. Thus, there is a need to design manufacturing strategies that control final property outcomes via optimization. These optimization techniques need models which describe the process-temperature-microstructure-property dynamics. This work demonstrates the use of a Gleeble thermomechanical simulator in conjunction with ex-situ hardness measurements to investigate microstructure and property dynamics. The data is used to fit transformation models, which are then used to generate optimal process plans. Simulations and experiments are used to assess the extent of control achieved using these plans, demonstrating the efficacy of this approach to AM process design. |
