Abstract Scope |
Next-generation structural materials are engineered by combining multiple elements and phases to enhance properties like strength and toughness. However, the complex distribution of these phases presents challenges in characterizing mechanical property variations across different regions. Bruker's PI 89 Auto SEM PicoIndenter addresses this by automating the generation of mechanical property maps alongside microstructure and analytical maps through SEM imaging and EBSD/EDS analysis. This integration enables high-throughput, precise analysis of spatial variations in mechanical properties. In this study, two materials—a laser-clad steel and an accumulative roll bonded copper-niobium (ARB Cu/Nb) alloy—are examined. Results show significant variations in mechanical properties due to microstructural differences, such as grain refinement and phase transformations. The PI 89 Auto streamlines the correlation between chemistry, structure, and mechanical behavior, advancing material optimization and performance enhancement. |
