The phenomenon of size effect, characterized by an increase in stiffness as structural size decreases, has garnered significant attention over the decades. Recent investigations have revealed that this effect extends beyond the plastic regime into the elastic regime, especially in the presence of strain gradients. In this study, we investigate the elastic size effect through micro-scale cantilever bending experiments and simulate structural behavior using finite element analysis based on couple stress theory. The experiments demonstrate a substantial increase in the effective elastic modulus as beam thickness decreases, a phenomenon not explained by conventional continuum mechanics. Given the growing prominence of micro-sized structures in various applications, understanding this elastic size effect is crucial for evaluating their reliability, particularly in micro/nano-scale contexts. Further research is essential to fully grasp this phenomenon and develop robust computational models. |
