Abstract Scope |
In this work we plan to study the halogenation of actinide metals. Depleted uranium (DU) metal will be converted to UCl3 in a chloride base salt. This will be performed by using a less noble metal chloride salt as a sacrificial reagent. Conversion efficiency, byproduct removal, and product purity will be the main metrics of interest. A similar process will be used to convert DU metal to UF4. The chloride and fluoride base salts to be studied have tentatively been selected as MgNaKCl and FLiNaK, respectively. Salt will be purified prior to DU halide synthesis processes. Characterization will be performed at all steps. Inert gas fusion (combustion analysis) will be used to quantify oxygen and hydrogen impurities (O/H impurities), and ICP-MS will be used to quantify composition. Filtration of the product will also be investigated as a method to remove solid impurities. |
