Abstract Scope |
The extreme operating conditions of Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) demand highly resilient structural material designs resistant to both corrosion and thermally induced residual stresses. A proposed method to address these issues is the implementation of a functionally graded cermet coating or the insertion of a cermet buffer between the metal structural material and ceramic coating. In these coating designs, the ceramic grains within the material matrix have been observed to crack under thermal loading conditions due to the thermal-property mismatch of cermet materials. This potentially leads to a reduction of the material’s corrosion resistance as the molten salt may attack the cracking surface. Hence, this work aims to investigate these phenomena using energy dispersive spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and x-ray diffractometry to evaluate the corrosion resistance of cermet composites in molten FLiNaK salt at various temperatures and annealing times to determine suitable coating materials in MSRs. |
