| Abstract Scope |
Bauxite residue, the major by-product of the Bayer process, is generated in large quantities and represents an underutilized secondary resource of valuable metals. This study proposes an integrated process for the sequential recovery of aluminum and titanium through carbothermal reduction roasting, selective leaching, and precipitation. Carbothermal roasting in the presence of sodium carbonate simultaneously metallized iron and converted alumina into water-soluble sodium aluminate. The effects of reductant dosage, roasting temperature, and residence time were systematically investigated to maximize aluminum recovery. Under optimized conditions, more than 95% of aluminum was recovered by water leaching. The aluminum-depleted residue was subsequently treated by acid leaching followed by hydrolytic precipitation to recover titanium. The proposed process demonstrates an efficient pathway for valorizing bauxite residue while improving the utilization of this industrial waste as a secondary resource of critical metals. |
