| Abstract Scope |
Rare earth elements (REE) play a critical role in numerous applications. To ensure the supply of REE, the idea of extracting them from tailings has been explored. Previous research focused on understanding how goethite-rich monazite tailings behave during smelting to recover metallic iron and concentrate REE in silica-rich slags. Various smelting tests produced three different slag compositions, containing approximately 22-28 wt.% REOT (total REE presented as oxide). This study delves into the process of extracting REE from these slags using sulfuric acid roasting followed by water leaching. The roasting was carried out at 400 °C, and leaching was done at ambient temperature. The leaching effectiveness for light REE ranged from 58.8% to 72.4%, while for heavy REE at 41.7% to 64.7%. The remaining REOT content in the residue was relatively low, at 6.3-8.1 wt.%. These results serve as a foundation for further advancements in refining REE from tailings. |
